Scaling and Root Planing

Periodontal diseases are infections of the gum and bone that hold teeth in place. If not treated periodontal diseases can become severe and can eventually lead to tooth loss. Periodontal diseases are often painless and you may not even be aware that you have a problem until your gums and supporting bone are damaged. Scaling and root planing in the early stages of periodontal disease can increase your chances of keeping your natural teeth.

Scaling and Root Planing is a special cleaning sometimes referred to as a "deep" cleaning. Scaling is used to remove plaque and tartar beneath the gum line down to the bottom of each periodontal pocket. The tooth's root surfaces are then smoothed or planed. A local anesthetic may be given to reduce any discomfort.

This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and also makes it more difficult for plaque to accumulate along the root surfaces. Maintaining good oral hygiene at home and continued follow-up by Dr. Sioutis is essential to help prevent periodontal diseases from becoming more serious or recurring.
